As parents, are we willing to drug millions of our children to make them easier to manage and be more compliant in school? Though this is a bold statement, there is a lot of truth behind the intensity. It may feel natural, almost our parental duty, to give our children medication to fight off an ADHD diagnosis, however what lingers within one pill may not be so natural.

The most common medical treatment of ADHD is the use of the drug methylphenidate, also known as Ritalin. Ritalin is actually a stimulant drug that normally speeds up the activity of the nervous system. For reasons that are not entirely clear, it tends to have a calming effect on those who suffer from ADHD; possibly by increasing the activity in the area of the brain responsible for filtering out extraneous sensation. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has given Ritalin a classification of Schedule 11 Controlled Substances.Unfortunately, this resides in the same category as cocaine, methadone, opium, and speed.

Irresponsible Misuse

These powerful and dangerous drugs have been discovered by college, high school, and even middle school campuses. The drug is becoming sociably acceptable as a party drug and even more so as a study aid. Kids who are not prescribed this powerful medication also take the drug because they say that it allows them to focus on their homework and tests. They say it ultimately makes them smarter!

Obviously, not enough of a warning has been brought to their attention or their pareants. Why wouldn’t these drugs be popular? They have nearly the exact same makeup as cocaine, but are easier and safer to find, buy, and sell.

Research

Ritalin has never been studied on children under the age of six. It’s a shocking feeling to hear that our children consume 95% of the world’s medication for this “American disease”. Why is it that the U.S. consumption of Ritalin is five times higher than the rest of the world combined? How is this drug being promoted so heavily by doctors and casually suggested by teachers to parents?

Reactions

The problem with taking Ritalin is that it does not do anything to resolve the cause of ADHD. It only masks the symptoms. Continued use of Ritalin over long periods of time has also been shown to have detrimental effects on the brain itself.

Nervousness and insomnia are the most common adverse reactions. Other reactions include hypersensitivity, anorexia, nausea, dizziness, palpitations, headache, drowsiness, blood pressure, pulse changes, tachycardia, angina, cardiac arrhythmia, abdominal pain, and weight loss.

There have been reports of Tourette’s syndrome and toxic psychosis. In children, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, weight loss during prolonged therapy, insomnia, and tachycardia may also occur.

Alternatives

Although, reactions may not be prevalent in all cases, is it really worth the risk? Chiropractic care takes advantage of the body being a natural healer. Your body’s nervous system acts like a steering wheel for the rest of the body. When it is functioning properly, the rest of your body will follow behind it.

Chiropractors locate and correct nerve system disturbances in the human body, i.e. subluxation. A subluxation occurs when two bones in the spine misalign and twist or stretch the spinal cord and nerves. The correction given by a chiropractor is a gentle movement to the bones of the head and neck. It is important as a parent to look at all treatment options before placing your child on Ritalin and chiropractic care is a great place to start.

Some of the peptic ulcers may heal without treatment, spontaneously. But if they complicate the whole situation is severe, there may appear ulcer bleeding, ulcer perforation, and gastric obstruction. Ulcer bleeding manifests as: melena or black stools, weakness, orthostatic syncope, hematemesis meaning blood vomiting. Treatment may be the rapid replacement of the lost fluids on venous line, even blood transfusion in more severe cases. To establish the exact portion of the affected mucous and the bleeding spot upper endoscopy is performed and the bleeding may be stopped with the aid of heated instruments.

If the ulcer is perforated the gastric contents are leaked in the peritoneal cavity and results in acute peritonitis. Those cases are very severe and surgery is required immediately, because the abdomen muscles become rigid and any motion determines extreme abdominal pain.

If gastric obstruction occurs near the pyloric canal which joins the stomach to the duodenum the patient reports increasing abdominal pain, diminished appetite, vomiting of undigested or partially digested food and weight loss. Upper endoscopy is recommended to exclude the gastric cancer as a cause of obstruction. If the gastric contents are evacuated from the stomach and cimetidine and ranitidine are administered intravenously the gastric obstruction is resolved. Patients with persistent obstruction require surgery.

Treatments

First of all prevention is very important reducing cigarettes and non-inflammatory steroids drugs, to relieve pain there are administrated antiacids such as: Maalox, Mylanta, and Amphojel, but watch out ulcers frequently return when you cease taking the antiacids medication. Histamine antagonists are cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), nizatidine (Axid), and famotidine (Pepcid) are effective in the healing of ulcers because that reduce the acid output but ulcers return when this medication is stopped. Patients may experience during the treatment: hallucinations, headache, confusion, lethargy. Cimetidine and ranitidine should?t be taken in combination with alcohol, anyway those doses must be adjusted and monitored.

Asomeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), pantoprazole (Protonix), esomeprazole (Nexium), and rabeprazole (Aciphex) are proton-pump inhibitors are used in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers and esophageal ulcers. They have no side effects even after long time using them and do not affect the digestion and absorption. Sucralfate and misoprostol promotes healing and protects the lining against acid attacks, Cytotec protects the lining from the effect of non-inflammatory steroids drugs. One of the adverse reactions of Cytotec is miscarriage. More studies suggest the use of combined antibiotics, tetracycline, amoxicillin, metronidazole (Flagyl), clarithromycin (Biaxin), and levofloxacin to eradicate H. Pylori. By elminating H. Pylori bacteria you will decrease the risk of gastric cancer in the future and the return of ulcer. There are no suficient proves that intake of coffee and alcohol determines peptic ulcers, dietary restrictions and bland diets may not have the expected result.

Although residential use of lead-based paint was banned in 1978, nearly one million children under the age of six in the U.S. have lead poisoning today. About 12.5 million houses constructed before the ban contained lead-based paint. Lead exposure can poison adults, but children are at a much higher risk.

Lead poisoning in children

Very young children have a double whammy when it comes to lead. They are more likely to get lead poisoning because they ingest their environments. They put everything in their mouths and they touch everything around them and then put their fingers in their mouths. Children exposed to lead suffer more harm than adults. Lead poisoning in children can cause:

•	Learning disabilities

•	Language and speech problems

•	Neurological damage

•	Hearing damage

•	Poor muscle coordination

•	Decreased bone and muscle growth

•	Damage to internal organs

•	Behavioral problems

•	Seizures

•	Death

Lead poisoning in adults

Children are at a greater risk, but lead poisoning is still very serious for adults, and can be fatal. Lead poisoning in adults can cause:

•	High blood pressure

•	Fatigue

•	Memory loss

•	Inability to concentrate

•	Digestive problems

•	Severe abdominal pain

•	Neurological disorders

•	Muscle and joint pain

•	Damage to the reproductive system

•	Cataracts

Symptoms

The symptoms of lead poisoning can point to a host of problems making them very misleading. Typically symptoms do not appear until lead levels are dangerously high and damage has already been done. Symptoms of lead poisoning include:

•	Lethargy

•	Irritability

•	Abdominal pain

•	Vomiting

•	Constipation

•	Loss of appetite

•	Weight loss

•	Anemia

Who is responsible for lead poisoning?

Narrowing down the responsible parties can be very difficult. In most cases manufacturers of lead-based paint are to blame, and it can be very hard to figure out who made the paint that caused the problem. When products cause harm, but the harm cannot be specifically traced from the victim to a single manufacturer, market-share liability can be the means to compensation. Market-share liability holds all manufacturers responsible for harm in direct proportion to their share of the market for the product.

In some cases responsible parties can include:

•	Landlords

•	Hospitals

•	Schools

•	Other government entities

About Tamiflu – its manufacturer

Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) is an oral antiviral treatment for influenza, and belongs to a class of medicines called neuraminidase inhibitors (NAI). Tamiflu prevents the influenza virus from spreading inside the body and are designed to be active against all clinically relevant influenza virus strains. It is proven to be effective in the treatment and for the prevention of influenza in adults and in children 1 year and older.

Roche, the manufacturer of Tamiflu since 1996, acquired the worldwide rights to develop and market the drug from Gilead Sciences, Foster City, California.

Comes in the strength of

Tamiflu can be used both for prevention and treatment of influenza. An oral medication, it is a convenient 75mg capsule which affects all key sites in the body where the virus multiplies. The dose for the adult treatment of influenza is a 75mg capsule, taken twice daily for five days. A pack of Tamiflu contains a full treatment course of 10 capsules.

Treatment must commence within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms for full efficacy. For post exposure prophylaxis the dosage is one 75mg capsule daily for up to 6 weeks.

Tamiflu is proven to be effective in adults and in children one year and older.

What is an influenza virus?

Influenza is an acute infectious disease caused by a member of the orthomyxovirus family: influenza virus A and B or, to a much lesser extent, influenza virus C. However, the term ‘flu’ is often used for any febrile respiratory illness with systemic symptoms that may be caused be a myriad of bacterial or viral agents as well as influenza viruses.

According to the WHO 3-5 million cases of seasonal influenza occur every year.

The influenza virus is classified into three categories: A, B, and C. Type A is the most serious and usually appears every two or three years. Prone to mutation, it regularly produces nonresistant strains; has caused many epidemics; and is also responsible for pandemics, in which entire continents are affected.

Type B influenza virus is the strain responsible for smaller infection outbreaks. Once infected with this virus, the immune system successfully resists this type of virus for many years. This type commonly infects uninfected children aged between 5-14 years.

Type C influenza virus is a very mild strain of the infection, similar to symptoms of a common cold. This can be treated with bed rest and plenty of fluid intake.

How to treat the influenza virus?

The flu targets the respiratory system which is the nose, lungs, throat and the bronchial tubes. During the flu, a patient exhibits some or all of the following symptoms.

It is possible to treat the flu using medication as well as make a rapid recovery using various other means like:

Toddlers should be attended to by a pediatrician in the event of a high fever that lasts for a day and for adults a doctor should be consulted when the fever exceeds 103 degrees or lasts longer than two days and is accompanied by significant fatigue or any kind of pain. The elderly and those with diabetes, a weakened immune system, cardiovascular disease, pregnancy beyond the first trimester, lung disease or asthma should call their doctor when flu symptoms arrive.

Tamiflu dosage is said to deliver a 38% reduction in the severity of symptoms, a 67% reduction in secondary complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia and sinusitis in otherwise healthy individuals and a 37% reduction in the duration of influenza illness.

Side effects of Tamiflu

The drug Tamiflu is to be given in proper dosages as prescribed by the doctor. Exceeding the dosage limits for any drug can lead to serious side effects. If you should become affected with any of the allergic reactions do not wait for the swelling to subside and go to the nearest emergency room. As with any drug, Tamiflu also has the potential to affect you in the following ways. You may experience:

More serious side effects have also sometimes been reported. While these ‘reports were mostly in children,’ it is still not known if they were actually caused by taking Tamiflu. According to the FDA, there have been reports (mostly from Japan) of patients causing:

Other than this you may experience less serious side effects like:

The side effects of Tamiflu, when you are taking other medication are almost none. Though so far no clinical tests have proved that Tamiflu reacts with other medication it would be a good idea to tell your doctor that you are taking other medication when you are being prescribed Tamiflu.

Those of you who are not bone-thin would probably welcome a bit of unexpected weight loss—especially if it meant you doing nothing to change your usual habits. But the truth is that unexplained weight loss can be a warning sign of a serious illness, or of an imbalance in your system.  If you or someone you know has experienced weight loss recently and can’t find an explanation for it, take a look at some of these common symptoms and see if anything resonates with you. Of course, this list is not comprehensive – it’s always strongly recommended that you visit your doctor to find out more.Unexplained weight loss could be tied to your mental health. But this is often hard to recognize, because there are no other physical symptoms, like chronic pain or a change in skin coloration. Mental health issues that can lead to excessive weight loss include the following, and can be treated with therapy and/or drugs:•   Grief•   Anxiety•   Depression•   Anorexia nervosaChronic conditions affecting your digestive system can lead to weight loss that cannot otherwise be explained. The following are some symptoms that, when connected with unexplained weight loss, can be a sign of a digestive issue.•   Diarrhea, constipation or other bowel problems•   Belching, flatulence, indigestion or heartburn•   Nausea and/or vomiting•   Abdominal pain or swellingThese can be signs of:•   Stomach ulcer•   Inflammatory bowel disease•   Chronic liver disease•   Malabsorption•   Diabetes, Type 1 or Type 2•   Hyperhtyroidism•   Cancer of the stomach, gallbladder, pancreas or liver•   Gastrointestinal disease•   Endocrine disordersThe elderly can also suffer from excessive weight loss for a variety of reasons:•   Ill-fitting dentures•   Alzheimer’s•   Dementia•   Stroke•   Neglect•   Difficulty preparing meals•   Inability to purchase food, whether because of money problems or physical problemsWeight loss can also occur in people of any age because of medications they have been prescribed. If you’ve recently started medication, or if your doctor has started you on medication, and you’ve experiences weight loss, contact your doctor and let them know.Tapeworms, which can be contracted from undercooked fish, pork or beef, can cause unexplained weight loss. Symptoms of tapeworms range from none at all to constant hunger but with no weight gain, abdominal pain, digestive problems or worms in stool. While this information is not meant to scare you, it is important to know that if you’ve been losing weight rapidly without dieting, there might be a serious reason for it. In short, no weight loss is unexplained. See your doctor if things get really weird.

Excess heat in the yin phrase is defined as a condition in which the body temperature of the women is higher than normal. It can be caused either by deficiency of yin or excessive yang in the body, leading to shortened yin phrase. In this article, we will discuss excess heat cause of shortened yin phrase due to kidney yin deficiency. I. Symptoms of excess heat pattern 1. Lower abdomen pain Lower abdominal pain may be caused by liver function in blood formation and spleen in transporting the blood to the abnormal region, since heat accumulated in the lower abdominal region, it causes abnormal function of spleen, leading to blood stagnation in the abdomen cramps and pain. 2. Red tongue Since kidney is responsible in regulating the fluid metabolism, eating hot and spicy food may cause kidney yin deficiency, leading to distorting the kidney function in moistening and lowering the fluids levels in the body, resulting in red tongue. 3. Dark urine Since spleen is important in transporting fluid in the body, heat causes abnormal function of spleen, thus decreasing the function of kidney in urinary secretion, leading to dark urine. 4. Etc. II. Causes 1. Intake of spicy foods Intake of spicy and hot foods may increase the body temperature that depletes the internal yin and causes liver’s heat to rise and affects the normal function of nervous system in information transmitting between themselves and gland, leading stress, anxiety and emotional and physical stress. 2. Kidney yin deficiency Kidney yin deficiency causes abnormal function of kidney in regulating the fluids the body tissues, leading to abnormal water retention in the body. 3. Infection or inflammation Infection or inflammation caused by invasion of bacteria and virus due to weakening immune system in guarding our body from foreign substances, causing heat pattern in the body that affects the kidney yin, leading to its inability to support the normal function of uterus, thus increasing the risk of uterus contraction. 4.

Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix. The appendix is attached to the cecum and is considered to be a part of the intestines. It measures no more than a few inches in length and looks like a thin tube. If its exit gets blocked by hardened mucus, food or stool a local infection will occur and as a response to this, an inflammation of it will be produced by the body.

Most of the parents are advised on what are the symptoms of appendicitis but they worry every time their child gets a belly pain even though the symptoms differ. It is important to know all about appendicitis in order to avoid misdiagnosing your child and getting stressed for nothing and also to know when it is necessary to go to the emergency room.

Some of the symptoms of appendicitis are: pain in the belly button area which in the end will move in the right side of the lower abdomen and will be much worse, low graded fever, nauseas and sometimes even vomiting, loss of appetite and constipation or diarrhea.

These symptoms are common to other illnesses but there is a particular sign that only appendicitis has: the nausea and vomiting begin after the abdominal pain had installed.

In very young children, these classical symptoms might not appear but other clues of appendicitis can be found. Sometimes they complain of a hip pain or they refuse to walk. After a while vomiting will appear.

Complications can occur if appendicitis is left untreated. The perforation of the wall is one of them, leading to a local abscess and even peritonitis which is dangerous because the entire lower abdomen will get infected. Perforation can occur in 15% of the cases after the first 36 hours of present symptoms. Therefore surgery must be done as soon as possible.

Another complication is the blockage of the intestine caused by the intense inflammation which stops the intestinal muscle from working and so the intestinal contents will not move anymore.

A more rare complication of appendicitis is sepsis. This happens when the bacterium gets into the blood stream and is free to go to other body parts. This is a serious condition and can cause even death, but luckily for us it is quite rare nowadays.

Generally appendicitis occurs in 10 to 30 aged patients.

There can be made tests to see exactly if you have appendicitis or not. A white blood cell count will be performed along with a urine test. Even abdominal CT or ultrasound can be performed by the doctor if he has doubts about your appendicitis.
